In Separation Without the Blur, I take you behind the scenes to show how I create subject separation without relying on shallow depth of field. Using my 26mm f/2.8 lens, I thoroughly explain how proximity, perspective, camera position, composition, and lighting work together to make my subject stand out in a busy environment. You’ll see BTS footage, hear my thought process behind every decision, and follow my complete editing workflow from RAW to final image. It’s about understanding how to create depth, dimension, and visual impact while keeping the surrounding environment an important part of the photograph.
Creating subject separation is about more than shallow depth of field.
Many photographers rely on wide apertures and blurred backgrounds to make their subjects stand out. But what happens when you want to keep the environment recognizable, maintain the details within the scene, and still create an image where your subject commands attention?
In Separation Without the Blur, I walk you through exactly how I accomplish this using the NIKKOR Z 26mm f/2.8 pancake lens. With such a wide field of view and an aperture of f/2.8, I take a different approach to creating depth, dimension, and subject separation without depending on background blur to do the work.
This course goes far beyond camera settings. It's about understanding the decisions that make an image work.
Through behind-the-scenes (BTS) video footage, you'll see how I approach the scene, position myself in relation to my subject, select my camera angle, and use proximity to control perspective. I thoroughly explain my thought process, including why I intentionally move extremely close with a wide-angle lens, how that changes the relationship between my subject and the surrounding architecture, and why those decisions are so important to the final photograph.
We also take an in-depth look at lighting and its role in creating separation. I'll explain how I balance my added light with the existing ambient light, create dimension on my subject, and use differences in brightness and contrast to make her stand apart from a busy background without losing the atmosphere of the location.
You'll learn how lens selection, camera-to-subject distance, perspective, scale, composition, lighting, ambient exposure, and color relationships all contribute to making a subject visually prominent.
And we don't stop at the capture.
You'll also watch my complete editing process, from RAW file to finished image. I'll explain the choices I make during post-processing, how I refine the existing light, color, and tonal relationships, and how those adjustments enhance the separation already established in-camera.
Throughout the course, I'm not just showing you what I did. I'm explaining why I made each decision, what that decision accomplished, and how the different elements work together to create the final result.
The goal is to help you recognize that subject separation isn't something you have to depend on your lens or aperture to create. It's something you can intentionally build through your understanding of perspective, light, composition, and the environment.
Because making your subject stand out doesn't always mean making everything behind them disappear.
