Dont’ Kill the Ambient
This extensive course was created EXCLUSIVELY for VP Box LIFETIME and YEARLY members.
The ambient light that makes you choose a location isn’t always the light that’s going to properly light your subject. Learn how I add the light my subject needs without destroying the mood, atmosphere, and existing light that made me choose the scene in the first place.

DON'T KILL THE AMBIENT
The light that made you choose the location isn't always the light that's going to properly light your subject.
That's where this course begins.
Sometimes the ambient light in a location is beautiful. It's creating mood, depth and atmosphere throughout the scene...but it isn't actually lighting your subject.
So what do you do?
You add light without destroying the light that made you stop there in the first place.
In Don't Kill the Ambient, I'll show you how I look at the existing light, decide how I want my subject to exist within it, and add only the light that's missing.
THE PROCESS
See what the ambient is doing.
Identify the light that's creating the feeling you want to preserve.
Decide how your subject should exist within it.
Before adding flash, determine what the light on your subject should actually look like within that environment.
Add what's missing.
Use your strobe to create the light your subject needs without overpowering the existing scene.
Keep the feeling.
Balance your ambient and added light so your subject feels like they belong there...not like they were lit separately from everything around them.
YOU'LL SEE IT HAPPEN
I'm taking you into multiple real-world situations where the ambient light looks beautiful in the environment...but isn't enough to properly light my subject.
You'll see what the location actually looked like, what happens with natural light alone, where I placed my light and why, the RAW files straight out of camera, and my complete edits from RAW to final.
You'll learn how I make decisions about:
- What ambient light is worth preserving
- How I expose for the environment I want to keep
- Where my added light should come from
- How much light my subject actually needs
- How to keep flash from overpowering the scene
The goal isn't simply to light your subject.
It's to light them in a way that makes them belong in the scene.
