Beyond the Depth of Field

Beyond the DOF Calculator
Why the depth of field is real, even when the math looks impossible.

Sometimes people psych themselves out from attempting things because they already feel it won’t work. Then there are others who will use a depth of field calculator and tell themselves something is impossible without even trying.

This course was created for the images that make people stop, zoom in, and question what they are seeing.

When an image is captured wide open, especially at f/1.2, some people immediately assume the depth of field was created in post. They assume blur was added, the image was heavily edited, or that the final result cannot be real because a depth of field calculator says it should be difficult.

In this course, I am pulling back the veil on an image I shared on social media that I captured at my San Diego Workshop.

You will see the RAW file with the EXIF data intact. You will see the image before the final edit. You will see the actual fall off as it was captured in camera, without added blur, masking, or any depth of field created in post-production.

Throughout the video, I zoom in multiple times so you can inspect the image at 100%, 200%, and 400%. You will see the full body of the subject, the sharpness, the fall off, and the detail right down to the eyelashes and stray hair.

This is not a course about editing tricks. The final edit is shown, but the editing is minimal. The real lesson is in understanding how distance, placement, plane of focus, light, and subject positioning all work together to create depth that is real, even when the math looks impossible.

You will also see the light placement and the choices made before the shutter was ever pressed.

Because the depth was not added later.

It was created in camera.
